Seating
I have chosen to set up my classroom like this because I want to create a learning environment filled with bright colors and multiple learning activities! Ms. Barajas is often a hard name for younger children to say, so most students refer to me as Ms. B. I would like to play off the bee pun and decorate my classroom with little honeybees, thus creating a “hive” for my students.
The desks are set up in a sort of semi-circle made up of tables of 4, so that if I stand in front of the white board, I will be at the center of attention and be able to focus on each individual child. The desks are grouped together so that the students can practice their social skills through collaborative group work. My desk is on the back wall between the library and pretend center to be able to keep an eye on my students while they are exploring on computers and to ensure they are all playing well together in pretend. I do not plan on sitting at my desk while the students are at their desks, so I believe it is okay for it to be a little separate from their desk area. I have chosen to include learning centers in my classroom as an alternative way to teach that will allow the students to get up from their desks and explore the content in a different way. I plan on separating the students into small groups and giving them different manipulatives at each table that relate to the lesson we have just covered. I can then move between these centers and guide them through the exploration activities as needed.
Seating Assignment Method:
Each table group has a different color, which students will be assigned to at random on the first day of school. As the year progresses and I get to know the students, I can assign seating that will allow them to receive the best education possible.

Preparation
Before the Students Arrive Checklist:
Greeting Procedure:
Every morning, stand outside the classroom next to the greeting poster before the students arrive. Say, “Good morning, (student)! How would you like to say good morning today?” Allow the students to choose either a handshake, hug, high five or silly dance by pointing to the picture of their selected greeting. On the first day, encourage parents to model greeting procedure by selecting a greeting and completing action with parent first and then child.
- Decorate classroom: set up first day centers, activities, and fill-in-the blank classroom procedures/contract, decorate bulletin boards, etc.
- Buy classroom supply set: markers, crayons, scissors, glue, etc.
- Organize files: handouts, graphic organizers, student profiles, etc.
- Create first day lesson plan
- Review list of students and learn names
- Create first day seating chart and place name tents on desk
- Prepare “Getting to know Miss B” postcard with pictures, contact info, etc.
- Parents

First Day Bell Work
Because my students are so young, when they enter the classroom on the first day, instead of completing a worksheet, I’m going to ask them to “find a friend” who is wearing the same color as they are. On the board, I will write the following instructions:
“Good morning! Welcome to kindergarten! We have so much to learn and so many new friends to learn with! Please find a friend wearing the same color as you and introduce yourself. Tell your new friend:
